HOW TO READ A CERTIFICATE OF ANALYSIS

A step-by-step guide to interpreting COAs for THCa hemp flower — the sections that matter, what to look for, and the red flags that should stop you from stocking a product.

WHAT IS A COA?

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a document produced by an independent, accredited laboratory that reports the chemical composition of a cannabis or hemp sample. For THCa hemp flower, the COA is your primary compliance document — it verifies potency, purity, and legal status.

Every product you stock should have a current, batch-specific COA from a reputable third-party lab. Not a generic COA from months ago. Not a COA from the grower's in-house testing. An independent, batch-matched report from an accredited laboratory.

SECTIONS OF A COA

A comprehensive COA contains several distinct sections. Here's what to look for in each:

1
LAB INFORMATION

Look for the laboratory's name, address, accreditation number, and contact information. Legitimate labs are ISO/IEC 17025 accredited or state-licensed. Verify the lab's accreditation is current and covers cannabis/hemp testing. If you can't find accreditation information, that's a red flag.

2
SAMPLE IDENTIFICATION

This section shows the sample name, batch/lot number, date received, date tested, and client information. The batch number on the COA should match the batch number on the product you received. Mismatched batch numbers mean the COA may not apply to the specific flower in your hands.

3
CANNABINOID POTENCY PANEL

The most important section for compliance and quality. Look for THCa (the dominant cannabinoid in THCa flower), Delta-9 THC (must be below 0.3% for Farm Bill compliance), total THC, CBD/CBDa, CBG/CBGa, and other minor cannabinoids. The Delta-9 THC percentage by dry weight is the number that determines legal status.

4
TERPENE PROFILE

Lists individual terpenes and their concentrations. Common terpenes include Myrcene, Caryophyllene, Limonene, Linalool, and Pinene. While not a compliance requirement, the terpene profile helps verify quality and authenticity. Premium indoor-grown flower typically shows rich, complex terpene profiles.

5
CONTAMINANT TESTING

Look for pass/fail results across four categories: Pesticides (should test for 60+ common pesticides), Heavy metals (lead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium), Residual solvents (relevant for processed products), and Microbials (yeast, mold, E. coli, Salmonella). All categories should show "Pass" or "ND" (Not Detected).

6
MOISTURE CONTENT

Reports the water activity and moisture content of the sample. Ideal moisture content for hemp flower is 8-12%. Too high means mold risk. Too low means the flower may be overly dry and harsh. This is often listed as "water activity" (aw) — should be below 0.65 aw to prevent microbial growth.

Pro Tip: The potency panel shows results as a percentage of dry weight. Some labs also show mg/g values. For compliance purposes, always reference the percentage by dry weight for Delta-9 THC.

THE COMPLIANCE CHECK

When reviewing a COA for Farm Bill compliance, follow this quick verification process:

  1. Find Delta-9 THC in the cannabinoid potency panel — it must be below 0.3% by dry weight
  2. Verify batch match — the COA's batch/lot number must match the product you're receiving
  3. Check the date — the test should be recent and relevant to the current batch
  4. Confirm lab accreditation — the lab should be ISO 17025 accredited or state-licensed
  5. Review contaminant panels — all categories should show "Pass"

RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR

Do not stock product if you see any of these:

  • No lab name, accreditation, or contact information on the COA
  • Batch/lot number does not match the product
  • Delta-9 THC at or above 0.3% (non-compliant)
  • Missing contaminant panels (pesticides, heavy metals, microbials)
  • Any "Fail" result on contaminant testing
  • COA is for a different product or strain than what's being sold
  • Test date is more than 6 months old with no updated results
  • COA appears altered, has inconsistent formatting, or missing pages
